The National Medical Commission has recently fixed the number of attempts to appear for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). Now students will get only maximum 6 attempts to qualify the exam. Earlier, students had unlimited attempts to qualify the exam. This year FGME exam is to be held on 20 January 2024.





Foreign medical graduates can give exam twice a year


NBE i.e. National Board of Examination conducts FMGE exam twice every year for foreign medical graduates. It is also called MCI screening test. Qualifying this test is necessary for Indian students who have done MBBS from abroad or are overseas citizens of India and want to practice in India after MBBS.




Maximum 3 years, exam will have to be qualified in 6 attempts


The NMC mandates that students pursuing MBBS abroad must finish both their MBBS program and internship within a maximum of 10 years to qualify for the FMGE. Typically, completing the MBBS course abroad takes around 7 years, with an additional year dedicated to internship, summing up to approximately 6 years in total.




Under those circumstances, students will have a limited window of 3 years to take the FMGE exam.. This exam is held twice a year. Because of this, any student will be able to give maximum 6 attempts only. After clearing FGME, the student has to do internship for 1 more year in India.   1. Clarity on NEXT has not been given yet Medical education expert Dr. Vivek Pandey, while talking to Taja News said that the government has decided to implement NEXT in place of FMGE indirectly. He said that this is also mentioned in the NMC order. But, no clarity has been given on this yet. The government has not yet decided when NEXT will be implemented and what will be its pattern.
